Bladder Snail (Physidae spp.)

Physid snails, commonly called the bladder snails, are a family of small, air-breathing freshwater snails.

Behaviour

Bladders can be found climbing on all surfaces in the tank, including the water surface.

Diet

They eat algae, diatoms and detritus, including dead leaves. They can also feed on decaying animals and fish food.

Natural Habitat

These snails are common in the North Temperate to Arctic Zones and throughout the Americas, in readily accessible habitats such as ditches, ponds, lakes, small streams, and rivers.

Breeding

Aquarium Setup

For an ideal bladder snail aquarium setup, consider the following:

Tank Size

Aquariums as small as 5 gallons (19L) can support a small population of these snails. They can be housed in smaller tanks, however it may be difficult to maintain a small group.

Substrate

Any substrate including sand, soil, and gravel can be used.

Lighting

Lighting that will support plant and algae growth is ideal for these snails.

Filtration

A sponge filter or no filter (walstad method) will easily handle the snails' bioload.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 59-86°F (15-30°C)
  • pH: 7.0-8.0
  • General hardness (GH): dGH
  • Alkalinity (KH): dKH
  • TDS: ppm
